Biking as a Tool for Post-War Recovery

After returning from the fighting in Khan Yunis, I found myself asking: "Am I really okay?"I felt fine, but the topic of post-trauma hovered over everyone who fought. As a medic, I know the most effective remedy: talking and sharing. Keeping it inside isn’t the answer.

So, I tried. I started to talk. But the truth? Only when I sat down with other reservists—people who truly understand—did I feel comfortable enough to open up.

That’s where the idea for a biking group for reservists was born.I live in an incredible area, filled with trails and scenic routes perfect for cycling. I realized that biking could be more than just a fun outdoor activity—it could also be a powerful way to connect with others, support each other, and find a renewed sense of purpose together.

I reached out to the Mateh Yehuda Regional Council, and they were immediately on board. Within no time, we started organizing and spreading the word. At our very first meetup, something special began to take shape.

What happened during our first ride?We started easy—on paved roads—before moving onto dirt paths and finishing on a beautiful singletrack. After the ride, we sat together with a case of beer (shoutout to Shapira Brewery for their amazing support!) surrounded by nature and shared stories.

We talked about life during the fighting and the challenges of returning to routine. The connection was immediate. Suddenly, without effort, we created a space where it felt safe to talk, listen, and realize we’re not alone.

And this is just the beginning.I truly believe this initiative has the potential to be something meaningful—for connection, for healing. We’ll keep updating on our journey. If you know reservists who could benefit from a space like this, we’d love for them to join us!
